Important Things to Know If You Have Fire Damage

4/26/2022 (Permalink)

When your home or business is affected by a fire, you usually don’t think about the aftermath of the damage right away. There will be all the insurance concerns, and calculating what needs to be replaced, but eventually, you will notice that lingering smell.

Here are some tips on getting rid of the smell and damage from smoke:

Let fresh air circulate through the building.

Close all the windows and doors except one and place a fan in a central location.

The one open window will act like an exhaust, forcing the pressure of the air blown by the fan to push out any lingering smoke.

Remove linens. Pillows and drapes, etc. need to be washed completely as soon as possible to remove any residue.

Plastic blinds will need to be wiped down by hand.
Wash all solid surfaces.

Tables, chairs, baseboards, shelving and tile all need to be sprayed down and scrubbed well to remove smoke residue.

One recommendation is to use a teaspoon of dish soap per gallon of water and a quarter of a cup of white vinegar to take care of any odors.

Vacuum carpeted areas. Using a vacuum that holds a high-efficiency filter, vacuum all carpeting in the affected areas. This type of filter will ensure that particles don’t blow back into the air.

Cleaning the furniture at this time will be a good idea.

Wash all windows and screening.

Make sure the smaller items are attended to, such as windows, light fixtures, screening, etc.

Scrub and mop surface flooring.

Cleaning your hard-surfaced floors will need to be done to remove all particles and residue.

Keep your mop rinsed so that those particles aren’t just being circulated back through the water used.
