Inspecting For Damage After A Storm

For much of the eastern part of the country, summer is more than just time to go on vacation and play at the beach or the lake. It’s also storm season, and sometimes these storms are violent enough to cause a lot of damage to your home or business. Roofs and landscaping can suffer, as can parking areas, windows and doors.

After a bad storm has moved through your area and it’s safe to move about, you will want to inspect your property and see what kinds of damages you have sustained. Notifying insurance companies and city officials of anything you see that will need attention is something you will want to do right away, so being thorough and making notes of each issue will help you keep track of what needs to be done.

One place you can inspect that will let you know of any damages that you may have overlooked would be your crawl spaces. Sometimes a roof can sustain damage and start leaking, but the evidence won’t show in the rooms below, and you can catch it by noticing the water damage in your crawl space first.

Use a powerful flashlight to inspect this area, and look in every area that is accessible. Remove vent covers in each room, and, while on a ladder, take your time to see as much of the crawl space area as you can. Maybe even enlist the help of another person for a second pair of eyes, they may notice something that you did not.

Water can pool in this part of your building and be attractive to mold, too, so you will want to look for damp places and get them dried out as soon as possible.
