Deodorize kitchen odors naturally before the Holidays

12/3/2018 (Permalink)

Everyone loves a clean kitchen, but there are certain areas in the kitchen that can trap odors. Even though you might clean your kitchen thoroughly, you might have a problem with lingering odors that regular cleaning can't get rid of. Here are four common problem areas in the kitchen and how you can deodorize them with safe, non-toxic solutions.

GARBAGE CAN
One of the first candidates for odor removal for any kitchen is the garbage can. One way to keep smells out is to throw smelly items straight into a garbage can outside of the kitchen, such as a can in the garage. If that's not possible, try putting vanilla or baking soda into the bottom of a kitchen trash bag. If the smell persists, you can wipe down the inside of the trash can with a 4:1 mixture of water and lemon juice.

KITCHEN SINK
If you've cleaned the kitchen sink and it still has lingering odors, it might be caused by rotting gunk in the garbage disposal. A good method of odor removal in the disposal is to cut up any citrus fruit such as lemon or lime, toss the pieces into the disposal, and grind them up. The acid in the citrus will disinfect the disposal with no harmful side effects.

MICROWAVE
The microwave can trap odors from meals you’ve recently cooked, leading to some strong smells. Citrus can be used here as well! You can use a leftover juiced or zested citrus fruit. Put them in a glass bowl, fill half the bowl with hot water, add some lemon juice, and microwave it for three or four minutes. The steam can also help loosen any food caked on the inside of the microwave so that you will be able to wipe it off.

REFRIGERATOR
The final place which can collect odors in the kitchen is the refrigerator. Here, when food goes bad, it can leave behind the smell long after the source is thrown away. You can reduce odors by wiping the fridge walls with a mixture of vinegar and water. Another solution between cleanings is to keep an open box of baking soda inside the refrigerator.
